Scientists have classified animals that live in winter into three groups: chionophobes, chioneuphores and chionophiles. These words are all based on chion, the Greek word for snow. Chionophile means, literally, snow lover, while chioneuphore translates to snow tolerator, and chionophobe means snow fearer.
Filled with nostalgic thoughts of Flat Creek, in the National Elk Refuge, I played with Google Earth, and thought embedding the below, would be a nice start.
In this post ascendancy American Depression, those of us who live in so called "Resort Areas" are lucky, in that we often catch the trickle down in relative luxury. Tourists of greater means than us "Townies", renting accommodations with kitchens, often leave a good portion of their purchased provisions behind, to be retrieved by the maids, or other staff, that, if they have no use for the items, will share them among their friends. The items shared will often turn out to be of the higher priced, more "Gourmet" variety, and will also include wine and other beverages, as well as canned goods that probably wouldn't appear in the average urban food bank, such as hearts of palm, and organic black beans. These leftover provisions are called, most appropriately, "Condo Kill". (Better than Road Kill )

Now, in these opening years of the twenty-first century, with Grocery prices spiraling into the Stratosphere, this can prove a great boon. Even though much of the booty makes it to the local food bank (in Jackson Hole it's named "The Cupboard"), I am fortunate to have friends and neighbors who work in the hospitality/housekeeping industry, who provide me with enough interesting food that I can survive until the end of the month, despite a depleted bank account. I bless those friends for this, as well as even bless the tricklers! This section of my blog, will contain, until publication (and probably beyond), the working copy of this cookbook "Condo Kill Cuisine", and will feature many of the recipes created from the inspiration of Condo Kill.

In this Poverty, so novel to us Americans - even to some of whom survived the Great Depression of the 1920s (not me, but many), we must return to the Ancient tradition of "Gleaning". The next tradition to revive (Congress and Bankers take heed!) is the Jubilee, wherein we will all find ourselves with a clean slate.

My awareness of the events surrounding this surprisingly (It is 2008!) reactionary encounter began on Thursday, July third of this year, when my neighbor Al returned from a climbing trip, by way of Boulder, WY, to tell me that he'd been Maced while dropping by the annual Gathering, to join a Drum Circle. He told me what all he witnessed, and so I did a bit of looking around.

I was waiting 'til all the fuss died down, but this glaring example of the abuse of police power, by what I once believed was a benign organization, is another case of "just too much." All that "Patriot Act" money, going for guns and Tazer®s for use defending our forests from a bunch of harmless Flower Children, seems like an awful waste - besides being rather harsh.
The Forest Service has long had a grudge against this gentle band of Anarchists, and I still haven't figured out why.
Although I've never attended a Gathering, I was acquainted once with the "Founder" of the <a href="http://welcomehome.org/rainbow/ target="_blank" title=""Unofficial" Home Page">Rainbow Family, Garrick Beck, son of Julian Beck of The Living Theater, and even though he once kicked a number of the people off his farm in Drain, OR, he still maintained his faith in their cause of peace.

Here are Some of the News Stories:
